The IEEE Student Branch of GCEK came into existence on 5 th June 2009. Since then we have conducted several programs for the benefit of students.
The Student Branch is conducting a weekly seminar program where students present a paper for 45 minutes. This is conducted every week on Friday from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm. The aim of this program is to provide a platform to students so that they get an experience in talking in front of an audience. In addition to the seminar program the students meet regularly on Monday evening to discuss matters related to IEEE and Student Branch.
The IEEE Head Quarters is regularly conducting contests in which students can participate. These are conducted globally and carry prize money. Currently running are (1) Smarter Planet Challenge (2)Engineering Projects in Community Service (3) Humanitarian Technology Activities Contest.
The Smarter Planet Challenge is due on 1 st November 2012. It is a team based project where students are expected to solve real world problems. Students of various disciplines like Engineering, Science and others can participate in this contest. Team may consist of three to five members of any discipline with at least one IEEE student member.
In EPICS the Student Members will work with a non-profit Community Organization and High School Students on Community Service related Engineering projects. The objective of this Contest to increase student interest in pursuing Engineering related career path. The proposals for this contest can be submitted at any time of the Year.
The HTA contest is due on April 2013. For this contest students submit project proposals that are beneficial to underserved communities. Selected projects will be given funding to implement the projects.
The Student Branch has conducted several programs this year. On 17.03.2012 we have conducted a one day workshop in Robotics. 58 students took part in the workshop. A team consisting of Ms.Tesni K Alex S6 EEE and Ms.Swathy P V S6 EEE participated in the Humanitarian Technology Activities Contest in May 2012. The theme of their project proposal was “Rural Electrification using Biomass”. 7 student members participated in the Robotic competition conducted as part of the Mechanica 2012 Tech Fest at IIT Madras in March 2012. A membership campaign for the year 2013 was organized on 6.8.12 during the First Year admission. 75 students took IEEE membership on the occasion. A seminar named “Cyber Crimes – Detection and Prevention” was conducted on 18.08.2012. It was inaugurated by Prof.K P Mohandas, IEEE Malabar Subsection Chair. The inaugural function was presided over by Prof.(Dr)K C Raveendranathan, Principal, GCEK. Three guests, Mr.Vinayakumaran Nair, Mr.Bhadran V K and Mr.Munivel E talked on the occasion. An IEEE orientation program was conducted for the First Year Students on 14.09.12. It was handled by Mr.Eldho George, SB Chair and Mr.Sarath A K, student Member.
The goal of the Student Branch is to provide a platform for the students where they can develop co curricular skills. Under planning is a Microcontroller Class with practical sessions, a C programming class and a Soldering practice session. A one day Robotic workshop is also under consideration. The Student Branch stands for increasing the awareness of students in co-academic matters, supplement their studies and help them reach higher professional standards. It is hoped that the activities of the Student Branch will generate a genuine interest among the students in their studies.
